Franciscan Healthy Living Center Offers Diabetes Education In Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Indiana - Having diabetes in today’s day and age is a lot different than the old days. Just ask Cindy Meyer, who lives in Fowler, Ind.
Gone are the days of having to administer daily shots. Thanks to modern technology, she can use a continuous glucose monitoring device (CGM) and an insulin pump.
She also credits the diabetes education program at Franciscan Health for keeping her on the right path with the resources and intangibles they offer.
After initially meeting with Suzanne Rossiter, a nurse practitioner at the Franciscan Healthy Living Center Lafayette, Meyer now has virtual visits every few months that last about a half hour.
“Suzanne answers any questions I might have during our visits,” said Meyer. “She has access to my CGM and it sends information to her. In turn, she can say, ‘This looks good or that looks bad or maybe we need to make this adjustment.’ We have made some adjustments with my insulin pump. I am very thankful we have the technology to do that.”
One of the biggest benefits to Meyer during her diabetes journey has been lowering her A1C (blood sugar level), which initially was up around 9 and now is down to 6.7, a significant decrease. She also has lost about 40 pounds, thanks to exercise, diet and GLP1 medicines.
“Keeping my blood sugar regulated has been the biggest benefit to me,” said Meyer. “If you continually go high with your blood sugar, you’re risking damage to your organs. My CGM will let me know when I'm getting low and if I get too low, an alarm goes off and I know that I need to get something to eat.”
The team at the Franciscan Healthy Living Center have taken a multi-disciplinary approach to helping Meyer and all the diabetes patients they meet with.
“They encourage you to exercise, and watch the food that you eat, like, instead of having fried chicken, have a salad or grilled chicken,” said Meyer. “It’s so important to keep your blood sugar under control so you don’t damage your eyesight or any of your organs. It has been a godsend to have all this available to me.”
Another benefit to Meyer is the peace of mind that she is afforded by the technology that is available for blood sugar monitoring. Having the CGM connected to her phone not only notifies her and Rossiter, but she also has set it up to notify her sister.
“I sent my sister, who lives far away, permission to see my blood sugar,” said Meyer. “It tells her when I'm getting low and if I don't see it in time, she'll call me and say, ‘Your blood sugar is getting low, and you need to eat.’ It’s amazing and I wouldn't change any of it.”
Meyer is a big proponent of the Franciscan Healthy Living Center and all the options they offer to help manage diabetes.
“I highly recommend people go to the Healthy Living Center if they have diabetes,” said Meyer. “Everyone there has helped me immensely and I am very grateful for that.”
