About This Treatment
Maternal Fetal Medicine offers care for both the mother and fetus in a complicated or high-risk pregnancy. We provide counseling, screening and fetal diagnostic testing. Maternal Fetal Medicine doctors work with your primary care physician to provide detailed ultrasound examinations, consultations, co-management or direct care for a high-risk pregnancy.
What is a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist?
A Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist is a high-risk pregnancy doctor who is an obstetrician/gynecologist (OBGYN) with several additional years of training to specialize in complicated and high-risk pregnancy. These doctors have advanced training and experience in the management of obstetrical, medical and surgical complications of pregnancy.
Who should see a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist?
Whenever possible, patients with pre-existing medical conditions, history of, or prior obstetrical complications are encouraged to see us for preconception counseling. This provides the opportunity to discuss possible risks and prepare a plan of management designed to optimize the outcome of future pregnancies.
Someone might consultation from a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist if they are:
- "At risk" and considering pregnancy
- Currently pregnant and classified as "high-risk" or "complicated" by their primary physician
- Seeking specialty expertise in performing high resolution fetal ultrasound examinations
